Not everyone’s a fan of John Legend’s #MeToo-approved reimagining of a problematic Christmas classic.
On Thursday, the 40-year-old singer released a few tracks from his festively titled album A Legendary Christmas: Deluxe Edition, on which he covers beloved songs like My Favorite Things.
But one cover already has listeners raising their eyebrows (and checking for plot holes): his updated take on Baby, It’s Cold Outside with Kelly Clarkson.
As you might already know, the original version of the song has come under fire in the past few years for its depiction of a man tenderly, but persistently, encouraging a reluctant woman to spend the night with him. While some Christmas purists have defended the original song, many radio stations have banned it from their holiday playlists altogether.
Legend, however, seems to have found a loophole by twisting some of the song’s lyrics. For example, the OG goes:
“My mother will to start worry (Beautiful what’s your hurry?)/My father will be pacing the floor (Listen to the fireplace roar)/So, really I’d better scurry (Beautiful, please don’t hurry)/Well, maybe just a half a drink more (Put some records on while I pour).”
But The Voice coaches sing:
“My mother will start to worry (I’ll call a car and tell ’em to hurry)/My daddy will be pacing the floor (Wait, what do you still live at home for?)/So, really I’d better scurry (Your driver, his name is Murray). Well, maybe just a half drink more (We’re both adults, so who’s keeping score?).”
The duo also revamped the part of the song that some claim alludes to date rape. While the original goes, “The neighbors might think (Baby it’s bad out there)/Say, what’s in this drink? (No, cabs to be had out there),” Legend and Clarkson sing:
“What will my friends think? (I think they should rejoice)/If I have one more drink? (It’s your body and your choice).”
Baby, it’s woke outside!!!
The new recording had fans divided. Some loved Legend’s take on the classic, with one YouTube commenter writing:
“This song is the funniest thing. I’m in love with it. [John’s] shift from being like you should stay, to if you don’t want to stay go home then. The part where he was like why are you still living with parents killed me.”
Meanwhile, another wrote:
“This is a good remake of this song… so beautiful!!!”
Of course, not everyone approved of the new tune. One critic wrote on YouTube:
“This is the stupidest song I have ever heard. Way to ruin a classic.”
Another pointed out how Legend’s updated lyrics made Clarkson’s lyrics nonsensical, writing:
“I get they are trying to fix the controversy with the original BUT now with the new ‘woke lyrics’ it doesn’t make ANY sense. Why Kelly Clarkson would feel trapped at his house if John Legend IS LITERALLY CALLING HER A CAB!! This song makes NO SENSE ANYMORE!!!!”
